On August 6th 1977, the world’s first DOCTOR WHO convention was held at a church hall in Battersea, South London. Organised by The Doctor Who Appreciation Society (DWAS) , Convention ’77 was ground breaking – featuring sta appearances from the (then) current Doctor Tom baker with his latest companion Louise Jameson (Leela) and former Doctor Jon Pertwee. 40 years later, stars, fans and organisers returned to the church hall to reminisce about that special day! In this second volume celebrating the anniversary, we feature a convention panel with organiser Keith Barnfather, contributor Kevin Davies and attendee Andrew Beech, held at another DWAS event The Capitol II on the 7th May 2017.

In the 1980’s US public television station New Jersey Network produced some groundbreaking documentaries about Doctor Who following the programme’s huge success in America. The Home Whovian was planned to be the first in a series of video releases in the USA featuring interviews with the stars of Doctor Who. In the event it proved to be a one-off. Featuring interviews with Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and John Nathan-Turner. Unique material from a unique moment in Time Travel TV – when Doctor Who conquered America!

Video footage telling the story of the biggest Doctor Who (1963) convention ever in the UK, "Longleat 83", which was put together to celebrate the 20th anniversary in 1983.

In April 1983, Roger Stevens and James Russell were given “Access All Areas” passes to the BBC’s Doctor Who celebrations at Longleat. Armed with a Ferguson Videostar camera they set out to record as much of the event as they could. While the BBC’s official footage amounts to only a few minutes for news broadcasts, James and Roger recorded several hours, and their material includes interviews with both Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker. Some of this material has been used in other productions by both Reeltime Pictures and BBC Video, but the original tapes were thought to be lost forever – until rediscovered earlier this year. So now enjoy another chance to take a trip to Longleat in 1983. The sound may not be perfect and the pictures come from ageing VHS tapes – but the atmosphere is unmistakable. So avoid the queues, and get to the front of the line with a trip down memory lane!

Many fans will best remember the late Michael Wisher for his definitive performance as Davros, creator of the Daleks. In truth Michael was the most gifted of actors, a chameleon who could transform his voice and appearance, and who worked many times in Doctor Who during the 1970’s. Michael loved his time in the programme and appeared in several spin-off dramas including Wartime and Shakedown. In this special production we recall Michael’s life and career in the company of Nicholas Briggs, Peter Miles, and Michael’s son, Andy.

Together with autograph sessions, a display of props, a visual FX lecture by Mat Irvine and talks by Terrance Dicks and producer Graham Williams, this convention set the tone for the future and led directly to the legendary DWAS PanoptiCons of the 1980s and 90s. 40 years later, stars, guests, fans and organisers returned to the church hall to reminiscence about that special day … what they expected and what they experienced. Also, to evaluate its importance … what it started … and what it led to!

Lital is a travelling artist, specialising in traditional arts, and Vinas is a musician, who creates his own instruments. What makes their love story unique is that they come from different worlds … Lital is Israeli and Vinas is Iranian. When they met in 2018 at a peace camp in Turkey, they were both on a journey of self-discovery, both experienced travellers and honed in survival skills. It was love at first sight and from that moment they were inseparable. With Israel and Iran bitterly opposed to each other, they were forced to become itinerant, travelling across Turkey and the Caucasus on short tourist visas. They travelled to Cyprus in 2019 and, so they would not be separated, they were forced to apply for asylum. With no support from the welfare services, they became homeless, living off the streets of Nicosia and taking handouts from charities. It was ignominious and dangerous. This is their story, a tale of hardship, isolation and peril … but mostly of love.

Peter Grimwade started his career at the BBC as a production assistant during the early 1970s and worked on three of Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who stories. He went on to direct Doctor Who in the early 1980’s with Logopolis and Earthshock winning major fan awards. He then moved on successfully to script-writing with Mawdryn Undead and Planet of Fire which he successfully turned into novels for Virgin Publishing. Peter died in 1990, cutting short his life and a promising career. This Myth Makers release is dedicated to him.

In 1996, Doctor Who returned as a TV Movie, filmed on location in Vancouver, Canada. Actress Daphne Ashbrook was cast as the eighth Doctor’s assistant, Grace Holloway. Bold and new, the film gave Paul McGann the chance to play Doctor Who and Daphne made Grace a powerful and uncompromising character … and a controversial love interest for The Doctor! In the Summer of 2004, Daphne visited the UK to make some personal appearances and re-join the world of Doctor Who, by recording an audio play, The Next Life, for Big Finish!
