Daniel accidentally witnesses a kidnapping on the street. After his report to the police didn't get the attention he had hoped for, he looks for an explanation himself and gets more and more entangled in doubts about his surroundings and his own actions. Through his commitment, he finds himself increasingly exposed to violence and eventually kills a person. During the interrogation by the public prosecutor, he experiences the purgatory of his awakening.
Set on the deserted North Sea island of Langeness, a lonely woman begins an affair with a stranger; only after he is identified as a political fugitive and deported does she begin to learn about his true identity and his past.
Bernhard works as a warehouse clerk in Munich. After being sentenced to probation for a physical altercation with a right-wing extremist, he could no longer continue his engineering studies. Bernhard meets Johanna. She comes from a well-to-do family; her father is a real-estate developer and her brother is in the diplomatic service. Bernhard wants to share his roots with her, so the two go to Prague, where he lived until the end of the war. But her father disapproves of the trip to the Eastern bloc. When Bernhard finds out that he owes his chance to develop new technology, which led to his career advancement, to his girlfriend’s father, he is upset …
The film shows the colorful life and hustle and bustle at the Viktualienmarkt in the heart of Munich. The day begins with the ringing of the city's many bell towers. The market is still quiet, but quickly becomes busy. The deliveries arrive and the traders begin to put away their goods. The rich offer ranges from baked goods, fruit, vegetables, fish and meat to flowers, handicrafts and delicatessen - the colorful market bustle begins. Individual small events and, above all, the people are observed. At 6 o'clock in the evening, it's time for the big clean-up before it starts all over again the next day.
