Wanneer de white-trash loser Joe Dirt tijdens zijn schoonmaak-baantje bij een radiostation de studio inloopt, begin de DJ (die moeite heeft z'n uurtjes te vullen) "on air" met hem te praten. Het gesprek gaat al snel richting het levensverhaal van Joe. Met duizenden luisteraars aan de radio gekluisterd vertelt Joe hoe hij als 8-jarig jongetje door zijn ouders in de steek is gelaten, en hoe zijn zoektocht naar zijn ouders in z'n werk ging.
Het verhaal gaat over een ruwe man die werkt voor een wrede woekeraar. Hij heeft geen familie, geen geliefden waar hij zich zorgen om moet maken, en dus kent hij ook geen enkele angst of aarzeling wanneer het er op aankomt om zijn misdadige taken uit te voeren. Op een dag verschijnt een mysterieuze vrouw in zijn leven die beweert zijn moeder te zijn. Aanvankelijk gelooft hij haar niet, want hij kan zich zijn moeder niet herinneren. Maar wanneer hij aan haar gehecht raakt, ontdekt hij haar afschuwelijke doch trieste geheim.
