De astronome Ellie Arroway vindt na jaren zoeken eindelijk een radioboodschap van een buitenaardse beschaving. De boodschap bevat gedetailleerde instructies voor het maken van een mysterieuze machine. Onder groot protest van diverse religieuze groeperingen wordt het apparaat gebouwd. De vraag is nu wie er plaats zal mogen nemen in het apparaat, dat vermoedelijk een ruimteschip is.
Een team bestaande uit diepzee-onderzoekers krijgt te maken met een aardbeving die het ondergrondse laboratorium volledig verwoest. Nu moeten de leden alles op alles zetten om te kunnen overleven. Onder hen bevindt zich de moedige, maar geharde Norah. Het team bestaat uit mensen die elkaar nauwelijks kennen en zo ontstaan er bizarre en soms existentiële conversaties, alsook vreemde relaties.

Het is niet geheel duidelijk wat hun uitvinding behelst. Misschien weten ze het zelf ook niet zo goed, want ze lijken verrast door de bijwerkingen van hun apparaat. Maar die bijwerkingen wijzen in de richting van iets veel groters dan ze ooit hadden kunnen vermoeden. Ineens wordt de inzet van hun werk exponentieel verhoogd en komt de vriendschap onder druk te staan.

In the first episode of Project Binky, we take a rotten old Austin Mini and strip it down to a bare shell. We then take an angle grinder to it and cut it to pieces. It's only then that the customised rebuilding process starts. We're trying to create one of the fastest Minis on the planet. We're going to rebuild it with the engine and running gear from a Toyota Celica ST185 GT4. Or at least that's the plan. Whether it comes off or not is another matter. We're filming this as it happens so what you see is only a few weeks behind where we're actually at so we're not sure yet whether we can do it. That's kind of the fun though.
