1943. Ergens in Oost-Europa verblijft een jongen bij zijn tante, Martha. Als Martha overlijdt moet hij het alleen zien te redden in de wereld, maar vanwege zijn joodse uiterlijk kan hij nooit lang verblijven in de Slavische dorpjes, waar bijgeloof en vooroordelen gemeengoed zijn. Hij reist van dorp tot dorp en komt in meerdere vaak levensbedreigende situaties terecht.
Robinzon is een Georgische agronoom, wiens groentetuin zich toevallig in de door Rusland bezette zone bevindt. De oorlog begint en mensen evacueren het gebied, maar Robinzon verlaat de groentetuin niet.
