Halverwege de jaren 80, Compton Californië. Vijf jonge mannen delen hun ervaringen door middel van het maken van 'brutale' en eerlijke muziek, die symbool staat voor de opstand tegen misbruik van gezag.

Craig en Smokey zijn twee vrienden uit Los Angeles, die op een vrijdagmiddag op hun veranda hangen, rokend en drinkend, op zoek naar iets te doen. Als ze de dope van een drugsdealer op roken, moeten ze snel op zoek naar 200 dollar. In die tijd roken ze veel wiet, worden ze overvallen en beschoten.

Jimmy 'B-Rabbit' Smith, een jonge blanke rapper uit een arme, hoofdzakelijk door zwarten bevolkte wijk in Detroit, wil deelnemen aan een wedstrijd voor rappers waar hij het zal moeten opnemen tegen de beruchte Papa Doc.

Losjes gebaseerd op het echte levensverhaal van rapper 50 Cent, is dit het verhaal van een drugsdealer die besluit zich op zijn grote passie te storten: hip-hop. Om een fatsoenlijke carrière als rapper van de grond te krijgen, zal hij echter eerst afstand moeten nemen van de criminele wereld...

Drie vrienden, de halfbroers Doughboy en Ricky Baker, en Tre Styles, groeien op in de achterbuurten van Los Angeles. Tre wordt opgevoed door z'n vader, Furious Styles, die hem normen en waarden bijbrengt.

Tess en Ben Finnagan zijn een getrouwd koppel dat hun geld verdient met het zoeken naar schatten. Helaas hebben ze al jaren niets meer gevonden en zitten ze dus ook aan de rand van bankroet. Als gevolg daarvan loopt hun huwelijk ook niet bepaald soepel meer en ze besluiten een scheiding aan te vragen.

The show was produced by T.I., Michael Hirschorn, Stella Stolper and Chris Choun of Ish Entertainment. The series, focusing on the 45 days before rapper T.I.'s March sentencing, hoped to encourage teenagers to avoid spending a life of crime by showing seven teenagers that there is another way. "We visited T.I. early in 2008 while he was under house arrest in Georgia and found a man utterly unlike his rap persona," Stella Stolper and Michael Hirschorn of Ish Entertainment said. "He felt that he was undergoing a karmic reckoning, a time when he would have to balance the scales of his life and integrate who he was with who he is. We've never seen someone so introspective, so smart about how who he was back in the slums of Atlanta is affecting who he is now."
