Elemental speelt zich af in Element City, waar vuur-, water-, land- en luchtinwoners samen leven. In de film leren we Ember kennen, een stoere, gevatte en vurige jonge vrouw. Ze is bevriend met het leuke, sappige go-with-the flow personage Wade. Hun vriendschap zorgt ervoor dat Ember de overtuigingen over de wereld waar ze in leven in twijfel trekt.
Over vijftig jaar sterft de zon af en daarmee de hele mensheid op Aarde. Onze laatste hoop rust op het ruimteschip Icarus II, dat de opdracht heeft gekregen een explosie in de zon te veroorzaken, wat hem nieuw leven inblaast. De eerste Icarus-missie is misgelopen omdat het schip spoorloos verdween en ook Icarus II verliest contact met de Aarde. Langzamerhand blijkt er meer aan de hand te zijn met hun missie en moet iedereen moeite doen niet krankzinnig te worden.
De getalenteerde jongen Ender wordt naar een geavanceerde trainingsschool in de ruimte gestuurd, waar hij samen met andere kinderen wordt getraind voor een naderende aanval van een buitenaards ras.
200.000 jaar. Meer had de mens niet nodig om het fragiele evenwicht op aarde – het resultaat van bijna vier miljard jaar evolutie – te verstoren.
Om haar eigen planeet te redden neemt een ruimteschip de levensvorm aan van een man (Eddy Murphy). Problemen doen zich echter voor wanneer er een vrouw (Elizabeth Banks) in het spel komt die het hart van die man verovert. De kapitein van het ruimteschip voorziet hierdoor vele problemen tijdens het redden van zijn eigen planeet.

Er ontstaat dan ook een groot probleem wanneer Fred gedwongen wordt om eveneens naar de Noordpool te verhuizen.

Onze helden, die verblind zijn door liefde, krijgen een moeilijk mysterie dat ze samen met de rest van het peloton moeten oplossen.
Rhoda Williams, een astrofysica student aan het MIT, rijdt in haar auto als ze een andere planeet ziet en naar buiten leunt om het beter te kunnen zien. Ze raakt een minibus en hierbij komt een familie om. Ze wordt veroordeeld tot vier jaar gevangenisstraf. Als ze vrijkomt zoekt ze de weduwnaar van de familie op, componist John Burroughs. De planeet die ze zag is een exacte kopie van de Aarde. Om de kans aan te grijpen om te kijken welk leven haar alternatieve ‘zij’ leidt op deze duplicaat planeet, doet ze een mee aan een wedstrijd waarmee ze een ruimtevlucht naar de planeet kan winnen.
