I etterkrigstidens Japan slutter en traumatisert tidligere jagerpilot seg til den sivile kampen mot et enormt mutert monster som angriper kysten.

I et desperat siste forsøk på å redde menneskeheten fra avgrunnen tvinges styrkene til å vende seg mot det som kan være siste utvei: en eks-pilot (Charlie Hunnam) og en utrent lærling (Rinko Kikuchi), satt sammen i team for å styre en legendarisk men tilsynelatende foreldet Jaeger fra fortiden. Sammen utgjør de to et lag som blir menneskehetens aller siste håp - for å avverge den siste og tilintetgjørende apokalypsen.
