A portion of the tail of a prehistoric reptile is discovered in Denmark. It regenerates into the entire reptile, which proceeds to destroy buildings and property and generally make a nuisance of itself. It can fly, swim, and walk, and has impenetrable scales, which makes it difficult to kill.

The film begins with Baron von Rosensteen's funeral. As Rosensteen has no heirs, the old Rosensteen Castle is to be inherited by the Rabenfeldt family. Supreme Court Attorney Berg visits the widow baroness about a document found among the papers of her son, the deceased baron. It turns out that the baron had a child out of wedlock with a non-noble woman. The widow baroness and the Supreme Court attorney decide to find the child, as this would mean that an heir to the castle had been found. The child turns out to be a girl named Anne Tofte, who works at a gas station with her uncle Lars Tofte and his colleague Hans Høy. They persuade Anne to live with the baroness for a while, which she is not very keen on. The widow tries to teach Anne to be a fine lady, rather than the tomboyish workshop mechanic her uncle had raised her to be.

Inger Holst is a nursing student who, at a party, meets the unreal Jørgen Frandsen, who invites her to a "festive night" one weekend at a hotel in Tisvilde. However, a tragic incident occurs at the hospital where she works. The incident involves the young widower, engineer Berg, whom she has come to know as a fine, real and sympathetic person. Once upon a time, large, beautiful seaside hotels adorned the coast of Øresund – from Bellevue Strandhotel in the south to Hornbæk Badehotel in the north. While the film's director, Stig Lommer, was director of the Hornbæk revues, he was a frequent guest at the bars in these hotels. He loved the glamorous life in this setting and asked Arvid Müller to write a light-hearted "Sommer-Lommer-Spøg" (Summer Joke) about the "deeds of the night" at a seaside hotel. The now defunct Beaulieu (north of Taarbæk) and Marienlyst (in Helsingør) form the backdrop for bandleader Hans Herbert and his pursuit of summer guest Mrs. Winter. This drives the exchange broker to a spontaneous suicide attempt in the middle of a mannequin show. However, he is saved by Mrs. Holgersen, who believes it is for her sake, so she blossoms completely. So much so that she is completely unrecognizable to the manufacturer when he arrives at the hotel.

Director Rasmus Strang enjoys it at his country house with his two daughters, Ulla and Linda. A motley crew must spend the night at a small, remote railway station. Strange occurrences and old stories about a ghost train that is supposed to pass through the station do not exactly contribute to a cozy atmosphere. However, the haunting turns out to be a ruse covering up smuggling activities, and one of the travelers turns out to be a detective on the trail of the smugglers. Based on the 1923 play The Ghost Train by Arnold Ridley.
It all happens over two days and—naturally—and in particular—two nights. A perfectly ordinary girl gets herself into a lot of trouble because of her slightly too big heart, which exposes her to trials and temptations she cannot overcome without the help of little white lies and pretence. She manages to overcome almost all obstacles, but loses her heart.
