Între 1993 și 1999, un bărbat a jefuit 29 de instituții financiare din Budapesta: bănci, oficii poștale și chiar agenții de turism. Polițiștii nu au avut niciun indiciu și nici nu părea că-l vor găsi. Singurul indiciu lăsat la locul jafului era mirosul de whisky. Presa l-a numit banditul whisky, iar el nu a rănit niciodată pe nimeni. Attila Ambrus, un imigrant transilvănean, care a fost portarul uneia dintre cele mai importante echipe de hochei din oraș, a fost identificat ca fiind banditul whisky. Polițiștii îl prinseseră în sfârșit sau cel puțin așa credeau.

Budapesta anilor ’30. Laszlo, evreu, proprietarul unui restaurant, îl angajează pe Andraș, un tânăr muzician, să cânte în restaurantul său. Cei doi bărbați se îndrăgostesc de frumoasa chelneriță, Ilonka, pentru care Andraș compune o melodie tristă. Devenită șlagăr, melodia atrage și multe necazuri, pentru că, mulți din cei care o ascultă, se sinucid. Fragila legătură dintre cei trei este brutal întreruptă de apariția industriașului german Hans. Și el îndrăgostit de Ilonka, Hans dispare o vreme, dar revine în armata germană, având grad de colonel. Profitând de noua poziție, el va crea multe probleme foștilor prieteni.
