Filmul este povestea plină de adrenalină a prieteniei care se leagă între doi polițiști, Martin Riggs - un alb rebel și cam sărit care, de când i-a murit soția, se aruncă în tot felul de acțiuni riscante fără să-i pese de viață, și Roger Murtaugh - polițist de culoare. În numai 24 de ore, cei doi devin parteneri și trec împreună printr-o nesfârșită cavalcadă de aventuri; ucid mai mulți băieți răi, supraviețuiesc unei curse în deșert, mânuiesc toate armele posibile și imposibile, sar de pe clădiri, o salvează pe Rianne, trec cu mașina prin ziduri, sunt torturați etc...

Aveau impresia că străzile erau rele, după care s-au întors la liceu. Foști dușmani din liceu, deveniți polițiști și parteneri, nu reușesc să dea lovitura, până când primesc instrucțiuni să pozeze drept elevi și să scoată la suprafață o rețea de traficanți de droguri din fosta lor școală. Trăind din nou ca niște adolescenți, cei doi revin la liceu și pun cazul, și prietenia lor, în pericol, cu rezultate dezastruos de amuzante.
