Charles Duchemin (Louis de Funés) je vydavateľom slávneho sprievodcu gastronómiou a nekorunovaným kráľom labužníkov. Preto cestuje bez prestávky a inkognito po celej krajine, aby preskúmal francúzsku gastronómiu. Zároveň je postrachom pre majiteľov reštaurácií, pretože jeho hodnotenie sa môžu pre nich stať osudným. Charles dúfa, že v jeho šľapajách pôjde aj jeho syn Gérard, ktorý síce zdedil po svojom otcovi zmysel pre chute, ale prednosť dáva práci v cirkuse, kde úspešne vystupuje inkognito ako klaun. Situáciu ešte viac skomplikuje otcova nová sekretárka, ktorá padne Gérardovi do oka. To vedie k ostrému súboju medzi oboma mužmi, ktorých názory na francúzsku kuchyňu sa výrazne líšia. Ich spor sa má vyriešiť v televíznej súťaži pred zrakmi miliónov divákov.
