Arcivojvodkyňa Sofia hľadá vhodnú ženu pre svojho syna, rakúskeho cisára Franca Jozefa. Veľba padne na Nené, najstaršiu dcéru jej sestry Ludoviky. Helenina mladšia sestra Sissi spravádza Helenu a Ludoviku na výlete do Bad Ischlu, kde sa majú Nené a mladý cisár spoznať. Po príjazde do Bad Ischlu sa točí všetko okolo Nené. Aby Sissi unikla tomuto zmätku, ide na rybačku. Pritom sa stretne s cisárom Francom Jozefom, ktorý je hneď unesený jej prirodzenosťou a krásou.
Film sa odohráva v Budapešti na začiatku 20. storočia. Dráma sleduje dvadsaťročnú Irisz Leiter, ktorá prichádza do maďarského hlavného mesta potom, ako dospievala v sirotinci, a náhle je konfrontovaná s vlastnou minulosťou a temným tajomstvom, čo obostiera jej rodinu.
Film sleduje počínanie chlapcov k sebe navzájom, pričom sa na povrch derú motívy sadizmu či homosexuality. Film získal vďaka šesťdesiatročnému odstupu od románu aj ďalšiu významovú vrstvu. Diváci v ňom mohli (retrospektívne) vidieť obraz podhubia, z ktorého sa zrodil neskorší nacistický režim.
