Zgodba o levjem princu Simbi, nasledniku kralja živali, katerega zahrbtno umori njegov oportunistični brat. Medtem ko stric vlada z železno šapo, princ odrašča onkraj savane in živi po filozofiji »brez skrbi do konca svojih dni«. Toda ko ga njegova preteklost začne preganjati, se mora mladi princ odločiti o svoji usodi: ali bo ostal izobčenec ali pa se bo soočil s svojimi demoni in postal to, kar mora biti?

Ko se Cole pojavi v letu 1996, zmedenega in očitno norega moža zaprejo v psihiatrično bolnišnico in tam spozna Jeffreyja Goinsa, neuravnovešenega sina priznanega znanstvenika, ter dr. Kathryn Railly, psihiatrinjo in avtorico, katere opozorila kolegom o apokaliptičnih prerokbah neznanega moža se sčasoma spremenijo v njeno trdno prepričanje, da Cole vendarle ni nor.
Simba in Nala imata trmasto hčer Kiaro, Timon in Pumba pa sta njeni varuški, vendar jima mlada levinja uide in se odpravi na prepovedano ozemlje. Tam sreča levjega mladiča po imenu Kovu in živali postaneta prijatelja.
