Отац и његове две млађе кћерке, Сатсуки и Меи, преселили су се у нову кућу негде у природи како би били близу њихове мајке која болује од туберколозе у локалној болници. Нова кућа изгледа нормално, али девојчице су у њој приметиле необична мала бића налик на пауке. Касније откривају још необичније биће у шуми, дивовско мачколико створење које назову Тоторо. То испричају свом оцу који им све поверује. Девојчице се спријатеље са Тотором који их повезе у аутобусу налик на мачку. Када је посета болници отказана Меи одлучи сама да оде тамо, али нестане, па се Сатсуки и отац уплаше и крену у потрагу. Опет се појављује Тоторо који поможе Сатсуки да пронађе Меи, те их одводи до болнице где се лечи њихова мајка.
