Detta är berättelsen om tre kvinnor i tre tidsperioder, vars öden drivs framåt och länkas samman av samma längtan, samma rädsla och samma litterära verk. Den första är Virginia Woolf, som 1923 i en förort till London ger liv åt romanfiguren Clarissa Dalloway i sin blivande succéroman "Mrs. Dalloway". Den andra är Laura Brown, en hemmafru i Los Angeles 1949 som läser romanen och påverkas så starkt av den att hon påbörjar en förödande omvärdering av sitt liv. Den tredje är Clarissa Vaughn, en modern version av Mrs. Dalloway i nutidens New York. Hon förbereder en fest för sin vän Richard, en poet döende i aids som en gång var hennes livs kärlek.
