I ett försök att lämna sina problematiska liv bakom sig återvänder tvillingbröderna Smoke och Stack till sin hemstad för att börja om, bara för att upptäcka att en ännu större ondska väntar på att välkomna dem tillbaka.

Ghost World handlar om bästa vännerna Enid och Rebecca som efter studentexamen kastas in i verkligheten och ett sökande efter en plats i världen utanför skolan. Enid, till skillnad från Rebecca, motsätter sig den omgivning hon anser befolkad av hycklare, losers och oärliga människor och får därmed svårt att skaffa och behålla ett jobb. Samtidigt har Enid blivit god vän med och sökt sig till en medelålders ensamvarg vid namn Seymour. Istället för att göra något åt början av sitt vuxna liv, ger hon sig ut på jakt efter en kvinna som kan tänka sig att inleda ett förhållande med Seymour.
