The Other Guys handlar om två poliser i New York, Allen Gamble och Terry Hoitz. Gamble är mer intresserad av pappersarbete än att vara ute på gatan, och Hoitz har som straff fått Gamble som partner efter att hans ivriga avtryckarfinger orsakat en pinsam incident. De har dock en sak gemensamt: de idoliserar båda två stadens främsta poliser, Danson och Manzetti. Men när en en möjlighet dyker upp för Gamble och Hoitz att själva bli hjältar, går inte saker riktigt som de hade tänkt sig...
