Matej Krópal and his wife farm on a Haná farm. Their niece Vera is coming to stay with them for the holidays. In a small traffic accident, Vera meets her acquaintance, the engineer Peters, who is engaged to the emancipated Olga. However, he is so tempted by Vera's wealth that he begins to court her.

A young princess arrives at her estate. She is bored by the welcoming ceremony and is quite happy to hear about the rebellious miller who refused to come to the castle. He lives with his mother and ward Hanička in an old mill. The miller is exempt from work, but he is obliged, if the lordship requests it, to accompany her with a lantern to the forest castle. The first movie adaptation of the Russian novel "The Twelve Chairs" by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeniy Petrov. The basic idea from this movie, in which a barber and an antique salesman were searching for money hidden in one of of twelve chairs, was later reused for other official and unofficial adaptions of the book

Intern Plichta arrives to work at a country estate, where there is a strict ban on marriage for officials, issued by the count. However, Plichta meets Jiřina Krátká on the way, falls in love with her and intends to marry her. Adjunct Ptáček and intern Ráček are also vying for Jiřina. All the officials already have brides in mind, whom they call chicaneries. The news of the count's death causes a stir, and twelve merry-making parties are planned at the estate at once...
