本片背景是在韩战时期，美空军英雄洛伊少校，得韦将军的女儿艾琳青睐。调驻日本时，部属凯利娶日本女人为妻，军部以法律不许及种族歧视不予承认；洛伊喜欢日本首席舞者阿侬（高以美子饰），两人相爱，但是美军却强制性地不允许他们结合在一起。凯利在万般无奈之下只有追随日本传统以死在一起，求与妻子永不分离。洛伊目睹好友巨变，感悟与其死守成规，不如先对相爱的人负责互尽义务再说，遂与阿侬共奔前程。本片描写的是伟大的爱情，他们为了爱情可以放弃一切，而此影片表现的人物性格刻划也十分到位，真正能体现出正处在那种矛盾无奈的情况下复杂的心境。此片还曾获得最佳男配角、最佳女配角，提名最佳影片、最佳导演、最佳男主角、最佳编剧、最佳摄影金像奖，及年度十大卖座影片。
本片内容描绘日本歌舞伎界中严酷的演艺生涯，以及女性为爱而自我牺牲的悲情故事。是沟口『一镜一景』表现形式的起点，启用的男女主角均来自舞台剧演员。女主角森赫子较长于花柳章太郎，沟口也不做掩饰，是极力以「写实」风貌呈现。本片依据当时电影法被选为优秀电影奖，也是第一届文部大臣奖作品。
著名歌舞伎演员中村雪之丞（长谷川一夫 饰），其童年时父母遭奸人陷害，相继身亡。年幼的雪之丞无依无靠，幸遇仗义善良的歌舞伎一人中村菊之丞（市川中車 饰）。菊之丞将其收为徒弟，倾囊传授舞技和剑术，发誓协助雪之丞报仇雪恨。转眼数年过去，雪之丞已经成长为独当一面的优秀歌舞伎艺人。他与师傅一路来至江户，终于发现仇人——原长崎奉行——土部三斎（中村鴈治郎 饰），复仇之火自此熊熊燃起……
